Anthropologist Robin Dunbar published his work on a theoretical cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships in 1992. He based this on observations of the social behavior of non-human primates. While no precise value exists, this upper limit, now known as Dunbar’s Number, is proposed to be in the range 100 to 230, and is commonly valued at 150. The Dunbar Number states the number of people one knows and with whom one keeps a stable and current relationship.
